"Damn it all to hell," Trystan said into the silence. Her throat was tight with unshed tears. She fought desperately with herself not to go after C.J. It's better this way, Trys. Her image, her career, her innocenceâshe could lose all of that. Let her goâbe the bad guyâ youâre used to that.
Trystan jumped down off the deck, retrieved her hiking boots from the car, and set out to climb the steep, slick surface of Cathedral Rock. She hoped the power of the vortex and the difficulty of the ascent would help soothe her raw edges.
The sun had almost set as Trystan reached the top. She hadn't stopped to rest at all during the climb, instead using the physical challenge to keep her mind off what had just happened.
Her chest heaved, her legs burned, and her body was shaking. She bent over double trying to catch her breath. "Stupid, Trystan. That was just plain dumb." She found a rock to sit on and took a pull on her water bottle.
For several moments, she sat watching the beauty of the sunset, caught up in the magic of the scenery. She breathed deeply, inhaling the scents of a summer evening, and allowed the power of the vortex to calm her jangled nerves.
It was atop places like Cathedral Rock that Trystan felt closest to her heritage. The energy from the rocks, the peacefulness of being with nature, the pull of the vortexâall of it surged through her. She closed her eyes and emptied her mind.
By the time she opened her eyes again, darkness had fallen. She groaned. "What were you thinking, Trys?" She took stock of her surroundingsâit was too dark to attempt the descent. She cursed her stupidity again.
Trystan located C.J.'s house set in the rocks across the way. There was a light on in what Trystan thought was C.J.'s bedroom. Her heart tripped. For a very long time, she simply sat watching the lights in the house, wishing more than anything that she was in C.J.'s bed, holding her close.
"Maybe it's a good thing it's too late for you to go back." Trystan found a flat rock and settled in for the night.
"I was worried sick about you," C.J. blurted, answering the door before Trystan could even knock. "You took off without saying anythingâyou didn't even leave a note. And you didn't come home all night."
"I'm sorry." Trystan took in C.J.'s haggard appearance. She was sure she didn't look much better. "I didn't think about the time..."
"You didn't thinkâyou got that part right. Where did you go? Are you all right? Did you get any sleep?"
"I'm fineâreally. I slept on Cathedral Rock."
"You stayed up there all night?"
"Yes."
"That's dangerous."
Trystan shrugged. "I grew up on the reservation. It's not the first time I've slept outside."
"For future reference, I've got three bedrooms." C.J. felt anger bubbling inside her. How can you be so cavalier? I was terrified I'd lost you.
"I'll keep that in mind." Trystan motioned to her watch. "It's time for your PT."
"Is that why you came back?" C.
